We're pleased to share that Interior Daily has published a feature on Gilkicker Light No.01, which Deniz is presenting this week at Material Matters as part of Shoreditch Design Week and London Design Festival 2026.
The light is the first object in The Shape of Memory, a new series of design pieces derived directly from historic sites. It grew out of Stories You Can Hold, a year-long research and development project at Fort Gilkicker in Gosport, where we have been working on the fort's conservation.
From site to object
Conservation work generates fragments: stone dust, hand-forged nails, charred timber, flakes of old paint. These are usually swept away. On this project we treated them instead as a record of the building's life, carrying evidence of the people who built, used and repaired it.
Deniz's LiDAR survey scans of the fort became a starting point for artist Sally Tyrie, whose designs drew on the interplay of wall, opening, shadow and light that defines Gilkicker. Working alongside artist Pippa Charlesworth and metalsmith Craig Palmer of Spin 360, the team developed the idea into a light. The finished piece is etched brass, coloured by fire as a direct reference to the burnt timber recovered on site.
The project reflects something central to our practice: understanding a historic place closely enough that its character can be carried forward, whether through careful repair or, as here, into something entirely new.

The Shape of Memory is on show at Material Matters, UNLOCKED Shoreditch, 118 Curtain Road, London EC2A 3PJ, until 17 September 2026. The installation includes material samples, sketches and prototype parts, with NFC tags that let visitors explore the research behind the piece.
