We are delighted and deeply proud to share that Fort Gilkicker has been featured in Historic England’s inaugural Heritage Investment Prospectus, a national platform highlighting key historic sites with the potential to drive regeneration and deliver lasting value to communities.
As the architects behind this transformative project, Deniz Beck Partners are honoured to be working with Gilkicker Builders to deliver a sensitive and imaginative redevelopment of this extraordinary site. Our shared vision is to celebrate Fort Gilkicker’s rich military past while securing its future as a unique and sustainable place to live.
Located on the Gosport coastline, Fort Gilkicker is one of just 17 landmark sites across England selected by Historic England for inclusion in the prospectus. Formerly listed on the Heritage at Risk Register, the fort is now undergoing a careful and ambitious revival. Since its purchase in 2022, owners Wayne and Lee have shown extraordinary commitment to bringing this historic structure back to life with integrity and purpose.
“The enthusiasm and tenacity of Wayne and Lee as they breathe new life into this remarkable fort is nothing short of impressive,” said Iain Bright, Inspector of Ancient Monuments at Historic England. “By unlocking the potential of this prominent landmark they are both securing a significant part of our heritage while delivering something new.”
At Deniz Beck Partners, we believe strongly in the power of conservation architecture to transform lives and landscapes. Fort Gilkicker is part of a broader commitment we hold to ensuring our built heritage continues to serve future generations, seen also in our work at Spitbank Fort and the Hotwalls Studios in Portsmouth.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Dame Caroline Dinenage MP for her longstanding support of heritage-led regeneration in Gosport, and to Lord Mendoza, Chairman of Historic England, for visiting Fort Gilkicker and recognising the role it can play in exemplary placemaking and sustainable growth.
“I firmly believe that investing in heritage and working with Historic England can help achieve exemplary place-making and sustainable economic growth, bringing real benefits to local communities,” Lord Mendoza noted during his recent visit to the site.
The inclusion of Fort Gilkicker in this first Heritage Investment Prospectus is not only a milestone for the project but also a reflection of what’s possible when public bodies, developers, designers, and communities work together to reimagine our historic spaces.
We look forward to continuing this important work and celebrating the legacy of Fort Gilkicker as a living example of how history and innovation can coexist with care and creativity.
