We’re pleased to share that Deniz Beck, Director of Deniz Beck Partners and a founding trustee of the Sustainable Conservation Trust (SCT), will be speaking at the upcoming Fortifications at Risk Conference on 5 September 2025 in Portsmouth.
Organised by the Fortress Study Group (FSG) as part of their 50th anniversary programme, this one-day event brings together international experts to explore the challenges and opportunities in the conservation and sustainable reuse of fortifications and military heritage sites.
Deniz will be contributing insights from two decades of architectural work on historic defence sites, including the award-winning Hotwalls Studios and the ongoing transformation of Fort Gilkicker. Her presentation will also spotlight the work of the Sustainable Conservation Trust in supporting community-led reuse of heritage at risk, particularly in coastal and fortified contexts.
Other confirmed speakers include:
- Prof. Nataša Urošević – University of Pula
- Dirk Roeder – Forte Cultura
- Jeroen van der Werf – Monument Protection Foundation, Naarden, and Chair of the International Fortress Council
The event is being hosted in partnership with the Sustainable Conservation Trust, whose mission aligns with the theme of the conference: ensuring historic buildings serve future generations through creative, environmentally conscious reuse.
Following the conference, a weekend of guided study visits to historic sites across the Portsmouth area will offer attendees an on-the-ground look at success stories—and ongoing challenges—in the field.
We look forward to this unique opportunity to contribute to an international conversation on fort reuse and to strengthen the network of those working to protect and reimagine these remarkable structures.
